Prehab

Prehabilitation or prehab for short is a relatively new term referring to the process of optimising physical function in preparation for major treatment, such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery.   At Encompass rehab, our physiotherapists are not simply interested in physical wellbeing but also preparing the individual through the expectations of major treatment. We can use our expertise to help guide you through different surgeries, pain management, swelling control, explaining treatment precautions (specific surge precautions).

Therapy involves: baseline assessment to certain areas of stiffness  or weakness, aerobic exercise, specific exercise training, specific functional tasks (e.g. transfers in/out bed) that are likely to be difficult following treatment.

Prehabilitation (including inspiratory muscle training, aeorbic exercise and/or resistance training) could reduce all types of postoperative complications.Moran J et al, Surgery, Vol 160, Issue 5, Nov 2016, pg 1189-1201

What happens during a home visit:

  • One of our Physiotherapists will telephone and arrange a time to come to your home for your initial assessment.
  • We will talk through your medical history and your specific goals for therapy.
  • We will then do a physical assessment of your joint movements and muscle strength. Followed by a balance and gait (walking) assessment.
  • Based on our assessment we will create a client-specific programme, based on your goals and likes/dislikes.

If you are unsure whether our services can fit your needs please get in touch and we can discuss your concerns, with no obligations attached.
